In this section you’ll find information that will assist you in your role as an Occasional Teacher. It isn’t subject specific but is related to Ontario’s Schools. This is where you’ll find information about classroom management, character education, and safe schools to name but three topics.

Everyday Mental Health Resource

This resource was co-developed by School Mental Health ASSIST and ETFO. It has been designed to provide K – 8 educators with evidence-based strategies to help develop the social and emotional learning skills of students. The activities were informed and field-tested by ETFO members. In addition, ETFO members were involved in a research project to determine the efficacy of the activities.

Safe@School

Safe@School is led by the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF) and the Centre ontarien de prévention des agressions (COPA). The goal of the project is to foster innovation and cooperation, highlighting best practices that feature COPA’s unique and constructive approach to violence prevention and the creation of safe, strong and free schools and communities. The Safe@School website offers teachers and the educational community a repertoire of relevant resources, as well as three different Professional Learning Modules.

The Speech-language Resources Website has a variety of high quality programs, books, booklets and worksheets, many of them free, that can be used in your classroom. The learning activities are designed to support your students’ comprehension and use of spoken and written language. The resources can be used for students across the K-12 years.

Code to Learn

Code to Learn offers free professional learning to Canadians on coding with young people. MicroWorlds coding software is available at no cost to engage youth across Canada. They work with educators and other community members to co-design curriculum activities & Coding Challenges—including the popular micro:bits!  Access the Code to Learn Community to get started with simple activities, request free books, resources and workshops, and find self-directed learning about computational thinking, MicroWorlds EX, JR and micro:bits coding activities.

Codewars

As OTs we are sometimes required to teach unfamiliar material, such as coding. To start your own learning journey check out Codewars, which offers a fun and unique way to learn to code. With a martial-arts theme, the program is based on challenges called “kata.” Complete them to earn honour and progress to higher ranks. This is a fun way to learn programming online if you’re motivated by a little gamification!

The First Nations, Métis & Inuit Education Association of Ontario is a subject association for First Nations, Métis and Inuit education in Ontario, Canada. They support and help all educators understand issues related to First Nation, Métis and Inuit Peoples in Canada as well as offer strategies for teaching this content to all learners.
