In this section you’ll find information that will assist you in your role as an Occasional Teacher. It isn’t subject specific but is related to Ontario’s Schools. This is where you’ll find information about classroom management, character education, and safe schools to name but three topics.

ABCs of Mental Health

The ABCs of Mental Health provides two free, web-based Resources – one for teachers and one for parents – to help answer these questions. The Resources include ideas for promoting the mental health of children and adolescents, information about how children change as they get older, descriptions of behaviours that might indicate a problem, and practical suggestions for steps to take.

Teacher’s Gateway to Special Education

Developed by OTF, with funding from the Ministry of Education, the Teacher’s Gateway to Special Education provides specific strategies and resources to help teachers address the unique needs of students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Well organized and extremely user friendly, the Teachers’ Gateway to Special Education includes links to board special education plans, Ministry documents and other helpful resources.  The Gateway also includes definitions of key special education terms, and can be used as a practical guide for teachers building Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

Ontario Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy

The Ontario Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy was launched in April 2009. All members of the school community are to be treated with respect and dignity. The strategy is helping educators across the province better identify and remove discriminatory biases and systemic barriers to student achievement. These barriers — related to racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of discrimination — may prevent some students from reaching their full potential. The strategy supports the government’s key education priorities of high student achievement, reduced gaps in student achievement and increased accountability and public confidence in Ontario’s publicly funded schools.

Ontario’s Aboriginal Education Strategy is helping First Nation, Métis and Inuit students achieve their full potential. The strategy includes initiatives that support learning and achievement for Aboriginal students. It also helps raise awareness about First Nation, Métis and Inuit cultures, histories and perspectives in all Ontario classrooms.
